Exhibition Description

Story of a Secret State takes you on a journey that awaits many North Koreans, from young children, to women and entire families. It’s a process that they must undertake to free themselves of the human rights violations that they suffer daily.

The story, as told by the 27 individual pieces of visual, contemporary artwork, will be supported by a collection of photographs, writings and cited pieces of factual information, highlighting the great number of issues facing the people of North Korea, including travel restrictions, horrendous working conditions, the questionable methods of distribution of provisions and aid coming from outside nations, the use of punishment, including torture and executions, the denial of the jurisdictions of other countries and most importantly, the neglect and concealment of the nation’s poor and starving citizens.

Story of a Secret State has been developed as a vehicle not only to raise awareness of the suffering in North Korea, but also to raise funds for those social minorities experiencing hardships, locally and abroad. It is hoped that this will form a sequence of subsequent exhibitions that will hopefully sustain this human rights movement for years to come.

We hope that by creating an exhibition with so much power and meaning, and along with our media partners, supporters and contributors, it will provide much exposure, not only for our artists and gallery, but for the people of North Korea as well.
